Tommyknocker Hop Strike Black IPA

Tommyknocker Hop Strike Black India Pale Ale, …Colorado Mountain-town Craft Beer, Heavy on hops and balanced with dark rye malt. 6.5% Alc/Vol., IBU 178. "Tommyknocker Legend: Tommyknockers slipped into the mining camps of Idaho Springs in the 1800's with the discovery of gold in our mountains and streams. These mischievous elves, though hardly ever seen, were often heard singing and working. They guided many fortunate miners from harm's way and to the gold they sought."

Okay, enough nonsense, let's drink it up.

Deep black, slim, but staying cocoa-creamy head.

Aroma: hops hit first, then rich, dark malt. Grassy, citric, fruity. With darkness below.

Taste: again, hops are large and in charge, dominate the flavor, charge the palate. Tingly, spicy, bitter hops, choked back by chocolate malt. A difficult dance, one I've not enjoyed in the past. And I'm not sure I'm 100% with this one, either. It's a tough clash of disparate flavors. Bitter and sweet, tangy tart and treacly. Somehow it works, but I'm still not completely convinced. However, it's tasty, and there's no serious competition between the diverse elements. I'm happy with it. It's going down nice and easy.
