I may have had an Imperial Oktoberfest before, but this may be my first barrel aged I. O. What’s that like? Let’s find out. 

Crystal clear, bright amber hue, small white head.

In the nose: big bourbon at the start, vanilla meets charcoal, oak on top of rich malt. 

In the mouth: caramel sweetness plus alcohol heat. The märzen beneath is recognizable, but largely covered by barrel character. A part of me wants more bourbon, but a wiser part of me says No, This is Enough. Spicy, sweet, oaky, malty, rich and tasty. 

I’m enjoying this. Glad I gave it a go.

Roll out the barrel…the bourbon barrel, that is! We’re taking the classic German-style Marzen and kicking it up a notch by adding the smooth, rich flavors that only nine months in a bourbon barrel can provide! Founders KBS Cinnamon Vanilla Cocoa Imperial Stout

Solid blackness, thoroughly opaque, slim ring of brown foam above. 

In the nose: Creaminess. Vanilla first, then along comes cinnamon, and plenty of cocoa on the side. Everything else stands below. 

In the mouth: Spice hits first, surrounded by cocoa. Cinnamon bomb, some might say. Vanilla pops up and mingles. Big cocoa. Spice flits throughout. High ABV gives it a kick. The coffee and the bourbon barrels are in here somewhere, but they're swallowed up by the cinnamon. Rich, spicy, delicious.

I am a bad procrastinator.

Back in October, I bought a 15-pack of this beer once I discovered that I had never had it before and the price was so reasonable. On October 6, I had the first one. Over the next few weeks I had 13 more of them, saving this last one to take notes on. And now, here it is, Nearly two months later. I had lost the desire to drink oktoberfests. But I made that pact with myself so long ago, and I must take notes, so take notes I shall.

Clear, amber-hued, slim white head. 

In the nose: Malty, herbal, floral. Clean. 

In the mouth: More clean, malty, herbal and tasty. Caramel malt flavors with classic Munich malts, noble hops, all done up in the traditional style. Minor hops, but major drinkability and flavor. Good märzen and you can drink it. 

And now I am all done with oktoberfests. No more pumpkin beers, either. On to the winter warmers!

Blink and you’ll think you’re in Bavaria. We went all in on tradition with our Oktoberfest, using imported German malts and hops with a beautiful lager yeast for the finish. Pours a gorgeous copper hue with a rich, malty and slightly sweet backbone. Our version is akin to the beer poured in the early days of Oktoberfest and, yes, it adheres to the Reinheitsgebot. Prost!

Founders Highly Acclaimed KBS A Flavored Stout Maple Mackinac Fudge

And here we have a beer that I have sat on for a good year, for no other reason than that I could. Many times over the past twelve months or so I have actually intended to drink and take notes upon it, but some voice inside me said, no, save it, for it is time to sleep.

Tonight, I silence that voice. 

And this may be a problem. You can't buy this beer anymore. Reading this post does you no good, if you glean from my writing that it's a beer you'd like to seek out and drink. For that, I apologize. 

But I don't apologize too much, for this is the journal of the beers I'm drinking now, now matter how missing from the shelves or out of season. I can't guarantee that'll you'll be able to drink them all yourself. That is the passion and the struggle. 

Full-on ebony appearance, throughly opaque, rich brown head, if slim, at best. 

In the nose: Caramel, coffee, massive malt, vanilla, coffee, dark fruit, ...and fudge. Sure, fudge. Maple? Sure, some of that. 

In the mouth: Rich and sweet. Deep, full-bodied. Vanilla and oak meet bourbon barrel and...fudge coffee? Is that right? They didn't add fudge, but "fudge coffee"? That's a head scratcher, there. 

I feel that this might have been "fudgier" when fresh. I did get to share a sample, way back then, and then I bought a bottle and saved it until tonight. No reason. Just realized that it had been nearly a year, and I'd better crack it open. My procrastination knows no bounds. 

Rich, deep, sweet, immense, almost overpowering...no, not quite. But, big, yeah, big. 

Michigan didn't invent old-fashioned fudge, but it was perfected here. We pay tribute to this time-honored tradition with KBS Maple Mackinac Fudge. By amplifying the rich chocolate notes of KBS using Mackinac Fudge coffee, then adding maple syrup and aging it in oak bourbon barrels, we've created a bold new take on our barrel-aged classic - one that could only have originated in Michigan.

Founders 4 Giants IPA Imperial India Pale Ale

Founders 4 Giants IPA Imperial India Pale Ale. 

9.2 % ABV, 80 IBU, Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids, MI. 

Clear, bright amber/crimson coloring, large and lasting ivory head above. Looking good. 

In the nose: Big everything up in here. Prodigious hops, substantial malt. Citrusy, slightly piney, plus plenty of malt sweetness. Interesting and inherently likable. 

In the mouth: First the juicy, then the bitter. Right from the start, I've met the kind of double IPA that I love to drink. Just delicious. Lot of fruit, juicy, bitter, grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, apricot, met with massive malt, matched with the fire of higher alcohol. It's a hot one, sure, but so, so very yum a dum.  Quite tasty, and very satisfying . 

This was made from the recipes of four different double IPAs that Founders has previously brewed, and those beers seem to be represented by four figures convening on the label. I only recognize the bottom left face from Double Trouble. I searched BeerAdvocate and could not find labels corresponding with those other three. Is there a Founders superfan out there who can identify them for me? Step up, please! 

We’ve made a lot of imperial IPAs over the years and, in turn, have had a lot of arguments over which one is the absolute best. So, to settle this once and for all, our brewers mashed up four of our favorite recipes into the ultimate imperial IPA. 4 Giants boasts aggressive bitterness balanced by a malty, sweet backbone while huge aromatics come courtesy of the seven American hop varieties.

Founders Mosaic Promise Single Hop Ale

5.5 % ABV, 50 IBU. Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids, MI.

And here we have a beer that should have appeared here years ago. I'm drinking it now from a 15-pack of cans, which is an amazing deal, each individual can averaging out to a mere $1.13  apiece. But, before I brought that big box home, I had logged into it on Untappd twice, once in 2016, once in 2019, both times at Acadia cafe. What this means is that my distributor rep did not provide me with a sample of this when it was new (or I would have reviewed that sample here), and I bought our first keg out of blind trust that this Mosaic single hop pale ale would be a worthy beer, indeed. And so it was, and I ordered more kegs from time to time, though I never found myself in possession of a bottle or a can afterward, until now. (And never, or rarely, reviewed from on tap during my time at Acadia, for several reasons.)

And now, we will drink it: 

Crystal clear, bright golden hue, vibrant ivory head. 

In the nose: Fresh, lively, stunning. Mosaic hops are spilling out citric goodness.

In the mouth: Crisp, brisk, and bursting with hop bitterness. Flavors of orange, lemon, grapefruit, and berries abound on the palate. Smooth, lush malt keeps it nice at the base. Light bodied, easy-drinking, and abundantly flavorful. Never-ending happiness and exceptional session ability make this an almost perfect pale ale. 

Downright delicious. 

This clean, rich, golden beer showcases Mosaic hops and Golden Promise malts proving there truly is beauty in simplicity.

(Edit: I went to the Founders website to find more information about this beer, and could not locate it. It does not appear anywhere on their Availability Calendar. Did I purchase that 15-pack at the end of it's life? Has it been dropped for the unforeseen future? Did I really wait until the very last minute to review it?)

Founders KBS Espresso

 Founders KBS Espresso. 12 % ABV. 70 IBU. Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids, MI. 

Utter and complete blackness, thorough opacity, slim ring of brown foam above.

In the nose: deep coffee, rich, roasted, utter, earthy. Powerful. All covering up what might also be very interesting below.

In the mouth: it’s all about espresso,  rich, thick, ridiculous. More coffee than I’ve had in a beer in a long time. Cocoa and caramel lurks just below. Bourbon barrel aged effects are a side project. Quite tasty, this. 

Variant of KBS

KBS gets its coffee fix in the very first variant to come from our beloved bourbon barrel-aged stout. Yes, KBS may already be brewed with coffee, but it gets some extra oomph when it’s aged on espresso beans after being removed from barrels. The result is a fresh and snappy coffee twist on our classic barrel-aged beer. Who says you can’t start your day with a barrel-aged stout?

Founders Backwoods Bastard Barrel-aged Wee Heavy

11 % ABV. 55 IBU. Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids MI. 

I'm looking around the store where I work, and I'm thinking about what beers we have that I need to put in the Nib. My eyes fall upon a 4-pack of Backwoods Bastard, the barrel-aged version of Dirty Bastard, and I consult this very blog to see it nowhere inside. Brought the beers home, and checked BeerAdvocate. com, and lo and behold there are my notes from February of 2010, ten months before I got this thing up and running. 

In ten years I never bought any BB? Nope. According to Untappd, I checked into it once, at Bryant Lake Bowl in 2018. So, let's revisit it, and look at those old notes and see if they hold up. 

Hazed, deep dark crimson to brown, slimmed, dunnish head. 

Sweet, bourbon-y aromatics right off the bat. Cherry wood and leather. Spices and smoke. Rich and luxuriant. 

Taste: Very complex, too much going on to take it apart at first sip. You get the wood, the whiskey, and below the sweet Scotch ale at the base. Mmm, oaky...mmm, rich and bourbon-y. Starts sweet, gets dry and well-rounded, nicely balanced, and oozing over with wonderful flavor. You don't feel the 10% right away, but it gets in there, oh, yes...very nice. Not too much bourbon, which can be a detriment at times. If it weren't so strong or so expensive, I'd be at this quite a bit.

Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts, a bit of earthy spice and a scintilla of dark fruit. It’s a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate.

Founders Unraveled IPA

Founders Unraveled IPA.
6.6 % ABV, 50 IBU.
Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids, MI.

Largely clear, bright golden hue, slim layer of ivory foam above.

In the nose: Bright citric hop aromatics, led by lemon and lime. Very sunshine-y.

In the mouth: Bold hoppiness, brash citrus fruit flavors. Tangy and tasty. Light/medium bodied, and terrifically easy drinking. Long, lingering bitter hoppy finish. Fairly refreshing and exquisitely down able. Lean malt body. I'll kill this 6-pack in no time.

We unraveled some of our favorite American hops to get to the juicy goodness inside. Dry hopped with traditional hop pellets along with lupulin powder, an innovative hop product that separates lupulin from the hop flower, Unraveled IPA is incredibly flavorful and aromatic. Wheat and oats form a smooth backdrop to carry all those wonderful hop characteristics, while the pour is beautifully clear.

Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout

Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout. 11.3 % ABV, 40 IBU.

This has been an elusive one for me. For many years, it was only released as a bomber, limited editions, selling out immediately. I never saw one for sale. Now, I walk into a store and there's a 4-pack on the shelf. $22 for 4, so it had better be worth it. Right?

According to Untappd, I've had it twice before, a few years ago, when Bryant-Lake Bowl had it on tap. I don't order enough Founders kegs to qualify to receive a specialty like this one, and these days?

Anyway, let's drink the beer:

Rich ebony coloring, fully impenetrable, under a slim brown head. Looking great, in every way.

In the nose: Molasses, licorice leather. Smoke. Dark rum. Treacle. Dark chocolate, espresso, caramel and coffee. And maple syrup, of course. Damnably decadent. Utterly lovable. Oh, my. Ridiculously delightful.

In the mouth: Sweet, dense, delectable, powerful. Thick and delicious. All kinds of depth and decadence. Big 'n' bourbon-y. Tickles the tongue, pleases the palate. Indulgent all the way. Dark fruit, vanilla, cherries, chocolate, oak, sweetness and dryness together at once.

Canadian Breakfast Stout is an Imperial Stout brewed with a blend of coffees and imported chocolates, then aged in spent bourbon barrels that have most recently been aging pure Michigan maple syrup. 

CBS was born when we stumbled upon some bourbon barrels that had previously housed maple syrup. We opted to put the same base beer as KBS, an imperialized version of Breakfast Stout, in the maple barrels and, after one taste, we knew we had something special. Rich maple syrup, roasted coffee and velvety chocolate meld together in what can only be described as a transcendental drinking experience.

Founders Trigo Hoppy Wheat Lager

Founders Trigo Hoppy Wheat Lager. 6.3 % ABV. 35 IBU. Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids, MI.

Sometimes categorized as IPL, or India Pale Lager, but also called a "pale wheat lager." Confusing, just a bit.

Lightly hazy, pale golden color, slim white head on top.

In the nose: citrusy hop notes, slightly sweet, wheat-y.

In the mouth: Starts out snappy and sweet, wheat texture is all over the palate. Medium bodied, long finish. And tasty. Smooth. This'll be down my gullet and out of the glass in no time flat.

We’re strong believers that the only thing better than brewing beer is brewing beer with friends. We worked with our pals at Mahou San Miguel to bring the recipe for Trigo (Spanish for ‘wheat’) to life. They brought their lager-brewing expertise and we brought our hopping expertise. The result is a clean and crisp wheat lager with big, American-hopped aromatics. Salud!

Founders Dank Wood

Founders Dank Wood Imperial Red IPA Aged in Bourbon Barrels. 12 % ABV. 65 IBU. Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Dark reddish brown coloring, large, fuzzy, cream-toned head. Very appealing appearance.

In the nose: Dank? Yeah. Sticky-icky, for sure. Rich and resinous. Caramel and toffee creeps in. Lots of fruit pops in against the dark malt and bourbon barrel-ousness, grapes, cherries, raisins.

In the mouth: Thick and fruity. More than an IPA, nearly a barley-wine. Big from the barrel, big from the booze, and bursting with hops. Rich with malt. Huge. This is a big, crazy mess and so outsized and flavorful that I love it.

Hangs hard on the palate, this one. Stays thick, sticky, juicy-oosy. It's expensive, but I like it. And I'm glad I spent the dough to give these 4 bottles a try.

What do you get when a big, bold imperial red IPA meets an oak bourbon barrel? A palate stunner that’ll send your senses spinning or, as we like to call it, Dankwood. Rich caramel notes emerge from the depths of the IPA, highlighting strong malt character while the bourbon barrel-aging develops the complexity. A dank, sticky and slightly sweet sipper, Dankwood is the perfect alchemy of wood and hops.

Founders DKML Imperial Malt Liquor Aged in Bourbon Barrels

Founders DKML Imperial Malt Liquor Aged in Bourbon Barrels. "Kicks You Where You Most Expect It."  14.2% ABV. 38 IBU. Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids, MI.

Slightly hazy, bright amber/golden hue, slim white head.

In the nose: Pungent alcohol appearance from the first, Big booze, powerful fruit, intense hops, and whiskey a-go-go. Vast, rich, intensely flavorful.

In the mouth: More intensity. Sharp, loud, boisterous, banging. Spilling it all over the place. Busting out of it's britches. Alcoholic edges step over their boundaries. Corn. Vanilla. Malt. Booze. All that and more clambering over the fence and itching to get into it.

This one didn't slay like it warns us all. I was very satisfied, finished my glass, and tucked myself in, nighty-night, waking up none the worse from it all.

Or, maybe I'm lying. Maybe it done my brain in, and I burst forth from my home, naked as the day I was born, howling at the moon, and running wild until the coppers tore me out of that tree and tossed me into the hoosegow.

Maybe that's it. I'll never tell. You'll have to check the police blotter.

By the way, this marks the first "malt liquor" in the Nib. Some of my better written reviews of the past were of malt liquors that friends gave me, in order to see what I would write. Somehow, I haven't been able to buy them in order to re-post the reviews. If you care to donate, I'll send you my address.

Here you have what could be the first malt liquor worthy of a glass. Typically a slighted style, we thought we would class it up with a stay in the wood and a healthy dose of dry-hopping. A huge hit of corn gives this one a smooth sweetness while its time spent aging in bourbon barrels will give you reason to share. Be warned: this one’s a pry-off, not a twist-off.

Founders PC Pils American Hopped Pilsner

Founders PC Pils American Hopped Pilsner. 5.5% Alc. by Vol. 45 IBUs. 12 fluid ounces can. "Crack it. Pour it. Love it. " Brewed and packaged by Founders Brewing Company, Grand Rapids, Michigan.


Clear, bright golden hue, beautiful ivory head which lasts for a while, then slips down.

The P is for Pilsner, and the C is for the hops: Cascade, Centennial, Chinook...all the typical American/West Coast varieties that pop with pine and citrus, and that's what's happening here. Lemon, lime, grapefruit, with a slight tropical twist. Nice.

In the mouth: light bitterness boards the palate, but all else is smooth and easy. Light bodied, sleek and simple finish. Good ol' drinking beer. Lightly sweet, light bitterness, nice balance. It's alright. Good beer, and you can drink it. Nothing wrong with that.

What's the gobbledygook? Here it is: Pleasantly crisp, perfectly clean and profoundly crushable, PC Pils is our take on the classic Pilsner style. While Noble hops have been the preferred choice of Pilsner brewers around the world, we went with some of our favorite American varieties. Piney Chinook, pleasantly citrus Cascade and punchy Centennial make this an easy-drinker with floral hop characteristics. Pretty cool, if you ask us.

Founders Sumatra Mountain Brown

Founders Sumatra Mountain Brow, Imperial Brown Ale brewed with Sumatra coffee. 9.0% Alc by Vol.  40 IBU. Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids, MI. Bottled on 4/05/16. (So, I'm a little late to this party.)

Dark brown coloring, slim, cocoa-tinged head, some loose particles floating about.

Aroma: Dark malts meet deep, rich coffee tones. Caramel, toffee, molasses, allspice, clove...little hints of each.

In the mouth: Chocolate malts hit first, then caramel, then all the richness hits. Here comes the sweetness, matched with bittersweet and coffee flavors. Full bodied. Nice balance, just enough hops to keep sweetness at bay. Tasty stuff, indeed.

Let's read the label, shall we? "This bold brown ale gets it's body from a team of malts, including caramel malt for sweetness, flaked barley for dense foam, a bit of chocolate malt for color, and aromatic and Munich malts for added depth. German and Perle hops add a touch of bitterness to balance the sweetness. The addition of rich Sumatra coffee takes this perfectly balanced brown ale to a decadent level."

Well, not quite decadent, but close enough. I prefer coffee beers as stouts or porters for that extra, added depth and decadence, but this suits me just fine.

Founders Azacca India Pale Ale

Founders Azacca India Pale Ale. Founders Brewing Company, Grand Rapids, Michigan. 7% ABV. 70 IBU.

I've always wondered about the name of the Azacca hop, where it came from, but never ever got around to asking anyone. It's the Haitian god of agriculture, it seems. Well, cool.

Clear, clean, bright golden/amber coloring, slim white head.

Bold and bitter hop aromatics, shimmering citrus notes, a glimmer of cat pee, orange and grapefruit shining over the litter box. Beautiful.

In the mouth: Malty mouthfeel dominates the senses first. Lush and delicious. Hops take over the spotlight soon, flashing brilliant citric notes. Delicious and deliriously drinkable. Bright and lovely, with lots of yeast action still happening. A good drinking IPA, and it tastes good, too. Cheers to that!

Founders Project Pam Black India Pale Ale aged in Maple Syrup Bourbon Barrels

Black IPA aged in maple syrup bourbon barrels.

Utter darkness, with a rich, cocoa-tinged head, full and lace-leaving.

Aromatics come spilling out of the glass, maple and bourbon overload, smelled from afar. Come in closer: deep and dark, molasses, treacle, vanilla and chocolate. Some oak? Interesting, to say the least.

In the mouth: Surprisingly silky smooth. Rich malt, slick cocoa tones, vanilla and cherry notes, turning dry in the finish. Grassy hop notes pop up here and there, but bitterness is always kept at bay. I never would have said "black IPA" if it wasn't on the label. I'm still startled by the smooth. A nice little mix of the bitter and the sweet, always kept in balance, despite the bigness of it all.

There was no superfluous gobbledygook on the label, which left me wondering who is this Pam of which they speak? Is that her on the label? What's her project, looking like a dude? I have questions that demand answers.

Founders ReDankulous Imperial Red India Pale Ale

Founders Redankulous. Imperial Red IPA. Founders Brewing Company, Grand Rapids, Michigan. 9.5% alc. by vol, 90 IBUs.

Clearish, bright crimson coloring, large, creamy, off-white head, lasting long and leaving lace. Looks great.

Aroma is piney, citrusy, fruity, and, yeah, that most hated of words, to me,..."dank"...I should just give in, right? It's funky stuff, for sure. I like it.

In the mouth: Boom, boom, boom, boom. Big and full and fresh and vibrant. Everything at once, while being easily drinkable, but for the high alcohol. And that is looming large. Big malt, big hops, big everything. Whoa, this is serious. And I'm digging it. It's tasty as they get.

So rich and malty, so well-balanced, so thick with the dank (I hate myself for writing that)...this is a beer to be experienced. Once in a while. Nice one, Founders.

Founders Black Rye

You know what? I'd forgotten that this beer existed. I hadn't seen it anywhere, and I didn't remember ever drinking one. Then, a friend gave me a bottle, and I looked it up. Turns out that I'd written about a bottle back in January of 2005. Whoa, taking us way back. Here are those notes:


Deep black color, full cocoa/tan head..nice lookin'...I like it okay...

Aroma: rich and creamy, big, grainy, feeling, almost loud... very dark.

Taste: rich and full, very dark and tasty, posssessing exceptional grit, very full texture, hearty mouthfeel.

Medium bodied, so-so finish...kind of curious about the need for a beer of this kind, it doesn't satisfy like a porter or a stout. A nice drink, though not much to really remember.
Hurrah, Black Rye, ...

I'd file those notes under "unimpressed", to say the least. As for the bottle I had, still enjoyable, but nothing to get excited about.

Founders Big Lushioius (sic) Raspberry Chocolate Stout

Here's a word about this one before I begin. The price was a bit more than I normally like to pay, $15 a bomber. But, it's a Founders beer, and it's a raspberry chocolate stout. How could I go wrong. It's really a bottle meant for a tasting party or a bottle share, not for me to drink by my lonesome late at night, but I couldn't write notes in those circumstances. All of this, I do it for you. Ever so humbly. I drink the beers for you. Remember my sacrifice.

Founders Big Lushious (sic) Stout Brewed with Chocolate and Raspberries. 2014.

Appearance: Intense blackness, large toasted tan head, looking fantastic. Couldn't look better, in fact.

Aroma: Fruit is first out of the gate, raspberry is on top, wrapped in chocolate. More sweetness than tart, though they're both they're doing a fruit-cocoa tango. Right on .

Taste: Mmm, sweet and tart raspberry flavor floods the mouth, then chocolate takes over. It's nothing but big and bold and smooth and delicious. Loads and loads of dark, lush malt, dripped over with fruit and chocolate. Mmmm.
