Surly Oktoberfest. Märzen Lager.
6 % ABV. Surly Brewing, Minneapolis/Brooklyn Center, MN.
Clear, pale amber hue, slim white head.
In the nose: Cool and malty. Noble hops, with a floral touch. Slightly spicy.
In the mouth: Clear and crisp, with a zesty edge. Earthy malt flavors, boards the palate and hangs out at the back. Twist of fruit, kiss of hops, rich and malty turning clean and refreshing. Ends on a lightly dry note, a bready finish. Just enough malty flavors meets just enough easy-drinking to keep the celebration going.
Do I like it better than the beer it replaced, SurlyFest, which was not in the least a traditional märzen? No. SurlyFest was too unique and special not to love. Do I like it more than other Oktoberfests? It falls squarely in the middle. Short answer: good märzen and you can drink it. Nothing wrong with that. Nothing great about it, either.

BREWED FOR: EMBRACING TRADITION IN YOUR OWN WAY.
Oktoberfest lagers are the ultimate party beer. Up front, they’re rich, sweet, and malty, but they finish dry and clean with an ever-so-slight touch of hops. Prost!
