oliphant animals with human lips tropical sour

oliphant animals with human lips tropical sour. with passion fruit, mango, & pineapple.
5 % ABV. Oliphant Brewing, Somerset, WI.

Hazy, pale golden, slim ivory head.

In the nose: sweet, tropical goodness, mango and passionfruit/pineapple aplenty. Nice.

In the mouth: Sour takes command from the start, with tropical fruit flavors coming in behind. Sour at the top of the sip, sweetness creeping in and taking over for a bit, until it all starts anew. The sour never stops in this one, and the fruit keeps it a delight.

Surly Black Horsemen Danish-style Black Lager

Surly Black Horsemen Danish-style Black Lager. Collaboration with King Diamond.
5 % ABV, Surly Brewing, Minneapolis/Brooklyn Center, MN.

Knowing very little of the musician King Diamond or the beers he prefers, or whatever the heck a Danish black lager is, this will be all a surprise for me.

Dark brown color, edging on black, fully opaque, under a greenish/beige head, leaving a little lace.

In the nose: Grassy/floral hops take center stage. A touch of sweetness, a little fruit, surrounded by malt flavors. Interesting.

In the mouth: Fruity and sweet at the top once more, a bit hoppy, but lacking any bitterness. Light bodied, and easy drinking. Just enough malt for flavor and balance. Berries and grapes dominate over caramel and cocoa. Tasty stuff, all in all, but nothing especially special. Good dark lager and you can drink it, that's for sure.

Here's where the marketing crew waxes rhapsodic about all associations evil, metal and otherwise:

Brewed in collaboration with heavy metal royalty King Diamond, this Danish-style black lager pulses with wicked intentions, enormous riffs, and apocalyptic imagery. Roasted malts lend rich flavors of cocoa and dark bread with a hint of sweetness and a smooth, clean finish.

Lift Bridge Barrel Dessert Series Tan Van Coconut Candy Bar Stout

Lift Bridge Barrel Dessert Series Tan Van Coconut Candy Bar Stout.
8 % ABV. 30 IBU. Lift Bridge Brewing, Stillwater, MN.

So, they story goes that Dan had a tan van, and ate Mounds bars while he delivered the Lift Bridge beers, in early days. I can't help but think of a certain old Sesame Street sketch featuring Frank Oz as Lefty, when I hear "tan van." See below. Makes me wonder if there was a Fran involved. Or a golden an.

Dark, opaque, brown head.

In the nose: whiskey hits first, with coconut crawling out from below. Chocolate spills out beneath.

In the mouth: Bourbon is big and boisterous, nearly hot. Vanilla and cocoa, full-on whiskey flavors. Whatever was supposed to represent a Mounds bar is under a mountain of whiskey doused malt. Full bodied, rich, and tasty, but I feel this would be more improved with less bourbon barrel and a touch more coconut.

TanVan is inspired by one of our first delivery vehicles, a tan van that was fueled by coconut candy bars. A blend of a sweet dessert stout and a bourbon
barrel aged stout, combined with natural
chocolate, caramel, and coconut flavors.

Wild State Cider Raspberry Hibiscus

Wild State Cider Raspberry Hibiscus. 6.1 % ABV.
Wild State Cider, Duluth, MN.

Clear and rosy. No head.

In the nose: Bright and tart. Very berry, brisk and floral.

In the mouth: More of the above, playing on the palate. Crisp, fruity, floral and delightful. Berries aplenty. Light bodied, delicious. Refreshingly tart. Go drink it.

A cider on the sweeter side, this tart pink cider is a must-have. Raspberry, hibiscus, tart, bright.

Drekker Lizard People Double IPA

Drekker Lizard People Double IPA. 8.5 % ABV.
Drekker Brewing, Fargo, North Dakota.

I don't know who the artist is, but I have always loved the art on the Drekker can labels. So much so that I forget that when I read that it's a Double IPA, which I prefer, it usually turns out to be an NE, aka Hazy DIPA, which I do not. These days it's a surprise bonus when an IPA is not among the hazy variety. I end up having to applaud the rare breweries brave enough to make them. Because, you know, trends, they've got to be followed.

Anyway, on to the beer:

All hazed up, murky, dirty dull golden, sizable ivory foam caps it off. Hazy IPAs are not pretty, people.

In the nose: zesty, hoppy, citrusy, yeasty. Nice.

In the mouth: Big citrus, certain bitterness, blocked by the yeast. All the things that I want in a DIPA seem to be there, but that "hazy" is getting in the way. Huh. Yet, I still like it. I'm a pushover.

Bright fruit flavor, back up with hop bitterness, smoothed over. Lightish bodied, long hoppy finish. Juicy, tropical. Goes down nice and easy, gives me (most of) the treats I delight in with the style, hazy or no.

Lizard People Double IPA brewed with a super secret blend of some of our favorite juicy hops that was decided in a smoky back room under an oath of secrecy. This one will give you hints of ripe mango, berries, and interstellar lizards in people suits.

Number Twelve Cider House Black Market

Number Twelve Cider House Black Market. Black Currant cider
"Reinvent tradition." "Creating distinctive ciders that celebrate the fruit, the growers, and cider drinkers alike."
6.1 % ABV. Number Twelve Cider House, Minneapolis, MN.

Clear, bright crimson coloring, no head (naturally).

In the nose: Quite tart. Bold berry flavors. Quite fruity.

In the mouth: Tartness kicks it off, accompanied by berry & grape flavors, tons of tannins. Crisp, dry, tart, and delicious. Hey, I'd drink this again.

BLACK MARKET
Tasting Notes: Rich, jammy aroma, crisp black currant
Apples: Chestnut Crab, Connell Red, Cortland, Fireside, Honeycrisp, Regent, (Black Currant)

Venn Strata Hazy IPA

Venn Strata Hazy IPA. 7% ABV.
Venn Brewing, Minneapolis, MN.

Is the craze for haze goes on for days...years, even. As long as that's all anyone's brewing, I guess I've got to keep drinking them.

Hazy (as per the crazy for days-y), bright golden-ish hue, slim ivory head.

In the nose: Citrus galore, bold, bitter, beautiful. Fresh and lovely. Lemon and grapefruit, with a touch of tropical, too.

In the mouth: Decidedly dry, just a bit bitter, turning briefly into sweet and juicy. Bone dry, at times. Is this a "Brut" hazy IPA? Just enough juiciness, just enough a tangy, bitter bite to keep it all active and fun.

I like this one. Drank that crowler down in no time.

Hazy, juicy, tropical.
A hazy style IPA featuring Strata hops.

Malts: Domestic Pale, White Wheat, Flaked Oats.
Hops: Strata.
Yeast: British Ale.

Oliphant Brewing's The Kindness Trap a Barrel-aged Stout Inspired by True Events

Oliphant Brewing's The Kindness Trap a Barrel-aged Stout Inspired by True Events.
10 % ABV. Oliphant Brewing, Somerset, WI.

So, I made it back to Oliphant last Sunday, for the first time in over 5 months. It was very important that I return before year's end to get the rest of my "free" beers from my Smug Club membership. Time was running out. At last, Jason and I found the right Sunday afternoon to step in and see the taproom before 2019 ends. And I brought my empty growler, although there were only two beers on that I'd never had. One would come home with me in a crowler, but the other, a bourbon barrel aged imperial stout? Would they growler that? They would and they did, and now I am drinking it.

They were also crowlering it, so I got the label to slap on my growler, as seen in accompanying illustration.

Solid blackness, under a thin ochre ring. Looking perfect for the part.

In the nose: Depth and richness abounds. All the high gravity pressures of chocolate, coffee, anise, molasses, and more. Dark fruits, fig, raisin, date.

In the mouth: It's a bomb. Boom! Unmatched deliciousness. First the flavors found in the aroma, and next come all the big, bourbon-y associations. Vanilla pops in, cherries and berries, chocolate, espresso, leather. At times sweet, later dry. Full bodied, long malty finish. All kinds of delicious. Yum, in fact, a dum, dum.

Almost full of farts but surprisingly balanced.

Wild Mind Artisan Ales Mutual Weirdness Doppelbock Honey Ale

Wild Mind Artisan Ales Mutual Weirdness Doppelbock Honey Ale.
11.4 % ABV. 5 IBU.
Wild Mind Artisan Ales, Brewed and bottled in Minneapolis, MN.

Clear, bright golden color, large white head. Looking fine.

In the nose: funky and fresh. Fruity? Some parts honey ale, perhaps, but not at all doppelbock. Curiouser and curiouser.

In the mouth: Tart. Even sour. Almost. Fruity. And...interesting. It's sweet and it's tart, light bodied, long tartness in the finish, excellent drinkability. However, what the heck, and why is it called doppelbock. Doesn't taste like one, or look like one, or even act like one.

Let's peek ahead at the description: Brett-conditioned doppelbock ale aged in used mead barrels and on local honey from Ames Farm.

Anything else on the bottle label? Nope. Just that.

So, Doppelbocks are lagers, not ales. and never Brett-conditioned, nor brewed with honey. I have to wonder why they used these terms, especially since they are not detected in the flavors I'm experiencing. There must be a story here, and I'm dying to hear it.

I remember this one being on sale for being a slow seller, and the bartender telling me it was "a weird one." And being curious about what I thought of it. As the beer itself, nothing wrong with it, but as labeled, what are you thinking? Call it something else, anything else, and you're good. But, doppelbock ale? There's nothing resembling this anywhere in the beer, even if it makes sense, which it doesn't, but as a funky, fruity ale, sure, nothing wrong with it. Was this a mislabeled mistake? Maybe. No one can tell me. I'll finish it and be happy and move on to the next....

I like it, and I'll recommend it to a sour-head, but it's not favorite.

Lift Bridge So Jelly Barrel Dessert Series

Lift Bridge So Jelly Barrel Dessert Series Ale Brewed with natural blackberry puree.
8 % ABV, 30 IBU. Lift Bridge Brewing, Stillwater, MN.

Dark brown body, slim reddish brown head on top.

In the nose: bursting with berry, dark malt just beneath. Slight sweetness, plenty of fruit.

In the mouth: Dark berries grace the palate first, just a bit bitter and tannin-y, with dark malt flavors just behind. What kind of barrel is this? Whiskey, red wine? I'd guess the latter. No further information can be found. I'm not detecting whiskey barrel flavors, but I could be wrong.

Full-bodied, full flavored, long on the palate. Persistent tastes on the tongue. Forward fruit, barrel enriched. Tasty one, this. I recommend it.

So Jelly is a Barrel Aged Stout loaded with all natural Blackberry Puree.

Surly 13 Maple Barrel-aged Imperial Stout

It's been a couple of years since a Surly anniversary beer has appeared here in the Nib. And that's not the way it's supposed to work. Whatever happened to Twelve? Suffice to say that the official word from Surly was that it just didn't come out right. Wasn't good enough. So, it wasn't released and there officially was no Twelve. However, this decision came after the beer was bottled and wax-dipped.  Some exist out there, somewhere, and I hope I can try one of those, just to find out how bad it really could be.

Well, that was last year. And this year it's the thirteenth anniversary, and for the first time ever it's not a bomber, but a can, in a box, for thirteen bucks. Huh. Better be good. Also, it's the first package where I really notice the absence of the classic original Surly logo, being replaced by the simple letter S. It's probably been gone from the last few cans I've reviewed, but it's never been more apparent than now, as the original is being replaced on every platform they've got. It won't disappear from here, as I have plenty of representations on my glassware and coasters to last us for years and years. I will miss that silly little icon. This world will not see it's like again.

Let's crack that thirteen dollar can open, shall we?

Surly Thirteen. 12.5 % ABV. Surly Brewing, Minneapolis/Brooklyn Center, MN.

Black as night, slim, soon-gone dark ring of foam briefly clings to the top.

In the nose: Ridiculously rich and redolent, dark, deep and decadent. All the usual suspects combine: espresso, chocolate, anise, whiskey barrel, vanilla and cherry, and quite a potent dose of maple.

In the mouth: They it is again, all the more rich, thick, lush and delicious. Caramel and toffee and maple galore. Diving into the dark depths, sip and swallow, again and again. Massive malt. Moderate/low bitterness. Not too sweet. Full bodied, richly rewarding. Very luxurious and effortlessly likable. Again, if only it weren't a pint-sized can at $13 each, or I'd go out and hunt for more, but, alas, that should do it for me. Don't let it stop you, though.

Drekker What Lies Beneath Bourbon Barrel-aged Imperial Stout

Drekker What Lies Beneath Bourbon Barrel-aged Imperial Stout.
10 % ABV. 40 IBU. Drekker Brewing, Fargo, North Dakota.

Solid darkness. Utterly impenetrable. Slim cocoa ring of foam.

In the nose: All the feels are here. Rich and redolent. Caramel and cocoa, coffee and toffee. Certainly scrumptious. So nice.

In the mouth: Such sweetness. Much deliciousness. Mighty malt. Thick, rich, cocoa and coffee. Starting sweet, ending dry. All the usual suspects are in attendance, and it's all tasting great.

What Lies Beneath is a rich and smooth Imperial Stout that's been conditioned on cacao nibs, 20 Below Coffee, and vanilla beans.

Invictus Avenger American IPA

Invictus Avenger American IPA. "Beer for the Unconquerable Soul."
6.4 % ABV. 70 IBU.
Proudly brewed and packaged by Invictus Brewing, Blain, MN.

And now we have my first beer ever from the only poem-themed brewery in Minnesota. Invictus Brewing of Blaine takes it's name from the immoral ode by William Ernst Hensley, written in 1875. Captain of My Soul Kolsch, Hensley's Porter, Master of My Fate Barleywine, Out of the Night Stout, and Unafraid IPA are among their beers taking their handles from the poem. I was surprised that there were so few, actually. For a brewery that's been around for a year and a half, and that has 51 beers on Untappd, why no Unconquerable Soul Sour? Wrath and Tears Imperial Stout? Bludgeonings Of Chance Wild Ale? Come on, people....Horror of the Shade Black IPA, Bloody But Unbow'd Red Ale, Menace of the Years Barrel-aged series....so many more places you can go. Clutch of Circumstance Pilsner. Etcetera.

Clear, bright golden hue, solid, lace-leaving cream-toned head.

In the nose: Fresh and fruity. Good dose of hops in this. Piney, citrus-y, all the propers.

In the mouth: Slides down the throat with ease, popping with hop bitterness. Various fruit flavors coming on the palate, citrus and pine, stone fruit, a bit of apple. Bitter, hoppy, then ending dry. Medium-bodied, easy drinking. Absolutely delightful. An IPA one can consume without fuss, nor muss, again and again.

I would definitely have another if you please...

Crystal and Vienna malts gives this IPA a slightly bready sweetness that is balanced with some citrus and slight dank notes from Amarillo and Simcoe hops.

Sisyphus BA Peanut Butter Jackpot

Sisyphus BA Peanut Butter Jackpot.
10 % ABV. 55 IBU.
Sisyphus Brewing, Minneapolis, MN.

Solid blackness, slim brownish ring of foam.

In the nose: peanut butter pops on top, sweetness abounds, massive malt lurks below.

In the mouth: On the palate, whiskey is tops. Coming on thick, rich, lush. Dark, deep, and delicious. Chocolate and coffee flavors rise up to topple the peanut butter. Good dose of sweetness, just a touch of bitter, lots of balance. Full body, long finish. It's a good mix here.

This one really hit the spot. I let the notes above stand as I luxuriated in this one, indulging in some late night TV, before shuffling off to slumber.
"Look out, Baby Yoda, look out!"
Oh, no...no spoilers.

Wild Mind Skateboard Guitar Fruited Sour IPA

Wild Mind Skateboard Guitar Fruited Sour IPA.
6.3 % ABV. 20 IBU.
Wild Mind Artisan Ale, Minneapolis, MN.

Lightly clouded, bright golden hue, slim white ring of foam.

In the nose: Big sour from the very start, fruit just below. Arresting and beautiful.

In the mouth: Tartness dominates the palate at the beginning, once more, with fruity flavors behind, and a swift, dry finish thereafter. Fruity, just a little bit juicy, with a trace of hop bitterness. Not really enough to call it an IPA, however, but it's close enough, I guess. A bit thin-bodied, but refreshing and tasty.

Good enough for me.

Blend of aged foeder beer and a fresh IPA that was hopped with Amarillo, Calypso, and Idaho 7. The blended beer was then refermented with pineapple to create a fruited sour IPA has an abundance of fruit flavor ranging from bright citrus to lush pineapple, all on top of a tart, refreshing base

Central Waters Extremely Unsettled NE DIPA

Central Waters Extremely Unsettled NE DIPA.
8.9 % ABV, 45 IBU. Central Waters Brewing, Amherst, WI.

All hazed up and orange, under a vast ivory head.

In the nose: Outsized hop presence in the aroma, large with fruit, citrus and tropical. Bold, fresh, and lovely.

Now, to drink, or as we say in the Nib, in the mouth: Splash of hop bitterness up front, that fades a touch, but continues through the finish. Fruit and juicy dominates the flavors. Deliciousness abounds. Medium bodied, long finish.

Yum. Even yum a dum, dum. I'm not always into the NE DIPAs, but this one worked for me.

Here it is. The big one. A subtly bold Double New England Style IPA featuring Mosaic, Citra, and Mandarina Bavaria hops. Wherever you're trying to go, this thing will get you there.

Surreal Brewing Company Natural Bridges Kolsch

Surreal Brewing Company Natural Bridges Kolsch.
o.5 % ABV. Surreal Brewing, Campbell, CA.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that surrealism is my favorite art movement. After all, the main image at the top of this page was lifted from Rene Magritte, a longtime inspiration to me. (Not that I've ever learned to paint as well as him.) Dali, Miro, Ernst, Tanning, Tanguy, Duchamp, DeChirico, Picasso, Picabia, Rousseau....I love them all.

So, I would hope that a brewing company that names itself after surrealism would be one that I can get behind. Unfortunately, two of the three non-alcohol brews I've tried from them were horrible, and the third roundly disappointing.

At last, the fourth sample: will this one redeem Surreal?

Clear, bright golden, slim white head.

In the nose: Slightly sweet, cereal, whiff of fruit, and ominous portent of more...

In the mouth: Ah! Argh! Metallic, flat, lifeless....it's like my palate dropped off a cliff, never to return. Zero taste and flavor. Nothing at all resembling a kolsch. Ew. Awful. Unpleasant. Spirit destroying.

Drain pouring this and moving on. Heed my warning, one and all.

Pryes Bourbon Barrel-aged 2019 Lost Moon Russian Imperial Stout

Pryes Bourbon Barrel-aged 2019 Lost Moon Russian Imperial Stout.
14.2 % ABV. 46 IBU. Pryes Brewing, Minneapolis, MN.

Solidly stygian, dark as the deepest depth, under a slim brown ring of foam.

In the nose: Whiskey is king here. Big bourbon, plus vanilla, char, chocolate, espresso, anise, and more.

In the mouth: All that and then some. Richness upon richness, vastness multiplied. Deepness and deliciousness. Earthy, dirty, dusty and rusty. Big time bourbon reigns over this.

This was a delight, through and through. My notes ended above. I stopped thinking of words to describe it further and slunk into supreme satisfaction. I'll go out looking for another bottle to sock away for another day.

And here's what they say: Our 2019 Lost Moon contains a constellation of rich chocolate flavors imparted by roasted malts and Belgian Candi sugars. A double fermentation with Champagne yeast brings this beer back to Earth with an ultra-smooth, dry finish. Finally, entombed in bourbon barrels, it ages for nine long months building flavors of espresso, oak, and toffee.

Offshoot Relax Hazy IPA

Offshoot Relax Hazy IPA. 6.8 % ABV.
Offshoot Beer Company, Placentia, CA. (Subsidiary of The Bruery.)

So, this is what happens when a Belgian beer-based and sour-focused brewery is inundated with requests not just for an IPA, but the hazy kind that's all the craze these days. They create an Offshoot.

Thoroughly hazy, thick, milky, golden color, under a prodigious ivory head of meringue-ish foam, leaving lace.

In the nose: Bright, citrus-y hop notes at play, obfuscated only by the haze of the yeast at large.

In the mouth: Starts off big, bountiful hop presence on the palate, bold and citrusy, getting softer soon. Fades a touch, rounds out, dries a bit. Medium bodied, light finish. Easy come, easy go.
Very tasty, actually, and, you know, when it comes down to it, pretty damned delicious.

Relax [it’s just a hazy IPA] embraces the new way to enjoy IPA - unfiltered, fresh and full of hop flavor and aromatics... without the bitterness to stand in the way of kicking back with a juicy beer. It features a combination of Citra, Centennial, Simcoe and Amarillo hops, imparting fruity, tropical and citrusy notes to complement the round, soft mouthfeel of a hazy IPA.

Prairie Artisan Ales Screenshot Imperial Stout with Hazelnut Roasted Coffee

Prairie Artisan Ales Screenshot Imperial Stout with Hazelnut Roasted Coffee.
11 % ABV. Prairie Artisan Ales, Krebs, Oklahoma.

Solid blackness under a rich, brown, slim head.

In the nose: Sweetness, hazelnut, cocoa and coffee. So nice. Creamy. Enticing, delightful.

In the mouth: Rich malty flavors strike the palate first, deep, decadent, delicious. Mmm, dark is just the start. Robust. Sweet. Balanced. Majestic.
Powerful coffee flavors meld with massive malt, mixed with nuttiness and more.
Wow. I am being sent into beautiful rich, malty goodness bliss with this one.
Oh, my.

Bauhaus Vossisdoss Kviek IPA

Bauhaus Vossisdoss Kviek IPA.
6.6 % ABV. 52 IBU.
Bauhaus Brewlabs, Minneapolis, MN.

Highly hazed, bright orange/gold coloring, slim white head.

In the nose: Citrus pops, with slight spice on the side. Touch of funk and tart.

In the mouth: Well, this is interesting. My previous encounters with kviek yeast left me nonplussed and more confused than ever about what the big deal is about it. It didn't seem to add anything interesting at all. This one on the other hand, there's something going on.

It's a tad tart, a little bit funky, and then along comes the fruit. Bitterness is moderate, but there. Palate keeps busy with this beer. Medium bodied.  I finished it easily, and I liked it, but it's...I'm not sure what it is. Hmmm.

IPA fermented with Norwegian Voss Kveik yeast.

Three Floyds Space Station Middle Finger American Pale Ale

Three Floyds Space Station Middle Finger American Pale Ale.
6 % ABV, 50 IBU.
Three Floyds Brewing, Munster, IN.

Lightly hazy, bright amber/orange coloring, slim white head.

In the nose: Beautiful blend of citrusy hops pop up in the aroma.

In the mouth: Just a little juicy, with a brief bitter blast on the palate. A cornucopia of deliciousness ensues: grapefruit, peach, apricot, lemon. A touch of sweet to swim with the bitter. Lightish bodied, long lasting pleasure. This is a pretty perfect pale ale. I recommend it to one and all. Good pale ale and you surely can drink it.

From the dawn of time, humans have looked to the sky for answers. Space Station Middle Finger replies to all from its eternal orbit. Behold and enjoy Space Station Middle Finger, a bright golden American Pale Ale.

Wild Mind Artisan Ales Fall Black IPA

Wild Mind Artisan Ales Fall Black IPA.
5.7 % ABV. 30 IBU.
Wild Mind Artisan Ales, Minneapolis, MN.

I'm ever-so behind. This crowler was canned on October 4, purchased on November 24, drinking it on December 12. I'm sure it held up just fine, but I've got to get this stuff fresher.

Solid ebony, with a roasted tan head atop.

In the nose: Dark malt hits first, earthy, cocoa and coffee; with grassy hops rising up from under.

In the mouth: Rich, dark malt flavor dominate the palate, delivering notes of cocoa, coffee, berries, vanilla and more. Grassy, citrusy, piney hops pop in and join the mix. Nice balance in this, a good dose of hop bitterness, but never too much, meshing well with malt. Smooth, medium-bodied, easy-drinking.

Quite a nice black IPA, here

Brewed with American 2-row, malted oats, chocolate malt, chocolate wheat, and a hint of roasted barley, this black IPA was fermented with Voss Kveik and hopped with Citra, Centennial, and Simcoe hops. Fall blends bright citrus notes with hints of pine on a smooth chocolate base to create the perfect beer for an autumn night.

Sisyphus Stock Photos IPA

Sisyphus Stock Photos IPA. 6.8 % ABV, 60 IBU.
Sisyphus Brewing, Minneapolis, MN.

Lightly hazy, bright golden hue, slim white head.

In the nose: Citrus and pine, nice and dank. Remember when we used that word? That was fun, wasn't it?

In the mouth: Brisk and bitter at the start, with a fresh twist of fruity and juicy. Bright and citrusy, fresh and lively. Medium bodied, and refreshingly drinkable. It's right on the money.

Just delightful, this one. It's got all the right hops in all the right order. Giving me exactly what I want. More beers like this, please, and thank you, Sisyphus.

Our newest beer is now in stock... Stock Photos that is! Get it? Yeah, I know it's cheesy. Almost as cheesy as our stock photos on our Instagram - go check them out! This IPA has a hefty dose of Mosiac, Simcoe, and Amarillo hops.

Number Twelve Cider House Voyage

Number Twelve Cider House Voyage.
6.9 % ABV. No. 12 Cider House, Minneapolis, MN.

Here we have sample number two that I received last week from this newish cider-y in downtown Minneapolis, which I really do intend to visit soon.

Clear, pale yellow/slightly greenish, no head.

In the nose: Slightly tart, bright and apple-y. Big fruit, low sweet, nearly dry.

In the mouth: Crisp, delicious, and bone dry. Light bodied, easily drunk, and refreshing. Quite nice. If you're looking for a tart, dry one, look no further.

Tasting Notes: Champagne-like, slightly tart, hard and soft tannins
Apples: Connell Red, Cortland, Dolgo Crabapple, Fireside, Haralson, Honeycrisp, Honeygold, Keepsake, McIntosh, Regent

Odell Good Behavior Crushable IPA

Odell Good Behavior Crushable IPA.
4 % ABV, 37 IBU.
Odell Brewing, Fort Collins, CO.

So, "session" has been retired, and we're using "crushable" as an official descriptive? As the name of a style? Is that right? Ah, well, I can't stop progress.

Lightly hazy, bright golden hue, large ivory head. Looking good.

In the nose: Big citrus. Lemon and grapefruit. Slight tropical tones. Dry.

In the mouth: Exceptionally dry, just a little bitter, and a touch of the fruity. Lightish bodied. Swift finish. Have I said "dry", already?

So, it's low alcohol. Light bodied. Low calorie. A play on the session IPA, but using a new nomenclature. But it lacks in flavor. I'm not enjoying this, I'm afraid. Odell has always been one of the "do no wrong" breweries, but this one doesn't hit the target, whatever that is. Or maybe it does, and I just don't get it. There's no joy in this one. Oh, well.

We set out to create an IPA that’s both sessionable and bursting with hop flavor. Good Behavior is built like an IPA with bright hop flavors of tropical fruit and juicy peach yet balanced with a light body, slight haze, and crisp finish that’s truly crushable.

Firestone Walker Luponic Distortion IPA Series No. 14

Firestone Walker Luponic Distortion IPA Series No. 14.
5.9 % ABV. 59 IBU. Firestone Walker Brewing, Paso Robles, CA.

Clear, bright golden hue, slim ivory head.

In the nose: Bold, bright beautiful citrus and pine. Bursting with hoppy flavor.

In the mouth: Blasts of bitterness from the start, a shower of citrus zest and piney-ness. Just delicious. A barrage of bitter hops on the palate. Light-ish bodied, long bitter finish. Brittle and dry. Big citrus , bright fruit. Right on the money.

Luponic Distortion No. 14 features a blend of seven experimental hops from South Africa, Australia, Germany and the Pacific Northwest with explosive flavors of white grape, mandarin orange and passionfruit.

Prairie Artisan Ales Barrel Aged Birthday Bomb!

Prairie Artisan Ales Barrel Aged Birthday Bomb!
14.7 % ABV. Prairie Artisan Ales, Krebs, Oklahoma.

Thick and black. Rich chocolate, mocha-brown head above. Lookin' nice.

In the nose: Whoa. Rich, smokey, char, chocolate, anise, ...it's all here. Boom, boom, boom, boom.

In the mouth: Yum. Rich, thick, slick, and damnably delicious. More of those flavors form the nose come on the palate and more: vanilla, mocha, cocoa, caramel, espresso. Terminably flavorful. An abundance of tastiness. An embarrassment of richness.

Can you tell that I like it?

Imperial stout brewed with cacao nibs, chili peppers, coffee, vanilla beans, caramel sauce, and toffee that has been aged in bourbon barrels

Three Floyds Lazer Snake IPA

Three Floyds LazerSnake IPA.
7 % ABV, 55 IBU.
Three Floyds Brewing, Munster, IN.

Clear, bright golden, enormous ivory head.

In the nose: Popping with citrus and pine. Positively perfect. Orange, lemon, grapefruit, and fresh forest floor. Love it.

In the mouth: Nice bitter, hoppy smack on the palate up front, followed by fruity goodness, more bitter, and then a bit of a mellowing, but not much. Lays long and bitter on the palate. Juicy, fresh fruit flavor persists. Just flat-out delicious. Boldly citric, bitter, refreshing and tasty. Good stuff.

LazerSnake is a good old fashioned Indiana Pale Ale. Brewed with Special Bavarian hops that give LazerSnake it's smooth non-filtered appeal to all craft beer and macro enthusiasts.

Surly Dark Phase Stout

Surly Dark Phase Stout. 5.5 % ABV.
Surly Brewing Company, Minneapolis/Brooklyn Center, MN.

Solid blackness, utterly impenetrable, thick and lasting cocoa/tan head. Looking good.

In the nose: Soft. Milky, creamy, cocoa. Caramel tones. A little bit sweet. Nice.

In the mouth: Creamy stuff. Mostly malty, lower bitterness. Smooth and tasty. Light roast, overwhelmingly easy-going. Nice stuff. And you can drink it.

An easy-drinking stout with all the character you want paired with a lighter body. Roastiness and a pleasant, milk chocolate-like sweetness are in perfect balance, with a smooth, satisfying finish.

Wild Mind Verbena

Wild Mind Verbena. New England IPA.
7.6 % ABV. 30 IBU. Wild Mind Artisan Ales, Minneapolis, MN.

Thoroughly hazed, bright golden hue, slim ivory head.

In the nose: Slightly sweet, floral, briefly bitter. Citrus fruit for a bit, and a touch tropical. Lovely stuff, so far.

In the mouth: Juicy at first, turning dry. Blasts of citrus, then turning tropical, slightly and lightly bitter. Bright, brittle, blazing with bitterness, before finishing cool and dry. Medium bodied, good drinking. It's an alright NE IPA. I like it.

Town Hall Famarillo IPA

Town Hall Famarillo IPA. 6.5 % ABV.
Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery, Minneapolis, MN.

Here's one that was released at the brewery last Monday, but I couldn't get a growler of it then, because, well, they hadn't gotten around to filling them yet. So, I picked one up a week later, and I'm finally opening it now. Falconer's Flight and Amarillo hops= Famarillo.

Clear, bold amber/bronze, slim white head.

In the nose: Citrus and pine, all the time. Grapefruit and lime, similarly in a regular, timely fashion.

In the mouth: All the hops are here, and they're buzzing the palate with bitterness. Nice and mellow, but fully flavored. Easy drinking, with a long, hoppy, bitter finish. This is just the way I like it. If you want to sell me on an IPA, this is exactly how to do it. Mmm, mmm, mmm.

In actual fact, it is: yum, yum, yum a dum dum.

Number Twelve Cider Helix

Number Twelve Cider Helix. 5.5 % ABV.
Number Twelve Cider House, Minneapolis, MN.

Here we go, my first Number Twelve Cider House cider. Still haven't stopped at the taproom. Still not a cider guy. But they got me some samples, so I owe them a review, or a few. And here's the first one that I grabbed out of the fridge.

Clear, greenish, no head.

In the nose: Fresh, green, fruity, floral. Lightly sweet. Nice enough.

In the mouth: Apples, Oak. Dry. Light bodied, very refreshing. Not really getting the honey. Vanishes in the finish. Not bad, though. I can drink it. But for a honey cider, I'm only getting dryness. Expecting sweet. Huh. Oh, well. Guess the oak aging took that out.

Toasted French Oak, subtle spice/date notes

Also: Tasting Notes: Subtle spice, dates, honey, toasted French Oak
Apples: Chestnut Crab, Connell Red, Cortland, Haralson, Honeygold, Viking, (Locally sourced honey from our friends at Bare Honey)
ABV 5.5%

Junkyard Estonia 10/30 Smoked Baltic Porter

Junkyard Estonia 10/30 Smoked Baltic Porter.
10.5 % ABV. 80 IBU. Barrel Aged.
Junkyard Brewing, Moorhead, MN.

Here's a crowler I did not purchase locally and did not buy at the brewery (which I haven't returned to since 2016, alas, not for lack of desire). No, it was a little ol' inter-familial trade. Nephew Pat who lives in Fargo brought two crowlers to our family Thanksgiving dinner, and I brought an Oliphant crowler we didn't open. Why not swap? And so we did, and now I get to review this one. Away we go....

Deep and dark, just about black, with a tight brown ring of foam encircling above.

In the nose: Malt explosion. Incredible aromatics. Packed with smoke, chocolate, coffee, char, caramel, ...richness upon richness.

In the mouth: Thick, viscous, and damned delicious. Everything encountered in the nose is visited doubly upon the palate. Massive malt. Chocolate intertwines with smoke. More richness, more deliciousness. Increasing alcohol. Wonderfully warming. Luxurious and lovely.

Wow. This is so good. One of my favorite Junkyard brews of all time. Please make more, Junkyard crew!

Baltic Porter originate in the Baltic region when brewers started to combine aspects of British porters with those of Russian Imperial Stouts. Our version of this style is brewed with lager yeast and smoked malt for a lot of smoky complexity that helps to dry out the rich malty finish in this big beer.

Insight Catfished By A Collosal Catfish Double Dry Hopped Hazy India Pale Ale

Insight Catfished By A Collosal Catfish Double Dry Hopped Hazy India Pale Ale.

Hazy, all right. Bright golden, slim ivory ring of foam atop.

In the nose: Burst of citrus fruit: orange, grapefruit, lime. Slight sweetness.

In the mouth: Bright, bold, citrus-y flavors bombard the palate. Big juiciness. Moderate bitterness. Ending on a dry note. Medium bodied, easy drinker. Right on target for an IPA lover, like me.

City Lights Hazy IPA

City Lights Hazy IPA. Brewed in Milwaukee, USA.
7% ABV, 35 IBU.

Just poured a glass of grapefruit juice, it seems like. Murky gold, slim head.

In the nose: More grapefruit, with a touch of tropical sweetness on the side.

In the mouth: It's a juicy one, for sure. More grapefruit-y, citrus-y hop flavors drop on the palate. Mild bitterness at first, increasing for a bit before fading in the finish. The juice train keeps on a rollin'.

This isn't a bad "Hazy IPA." I almost like it. (Kidding...I do, I do.)

2019 GABF Silver Medal Winner. 2019 World Beer Championships Platinum Medal Winner. All Whirlpool hops. Staggered additions of Citra, Mosaic and Amarillo and double dry hopped with El Dorado and Vic Secret Lend tropical and juicy notes from these beautiful hops. Low bitterness, huge hop flavor and aroma, and a full and fluffy body make this beer go down easy.

Boulevard Steep Drop! Nitro Coffee Milk Stout

Boulevard Steep Drop! Nitro Coffee Milk Stout. "Dark. Velvet. Roast."
Brewed with Fair Trade, Small Batch Coffee. 5.2 % ABV. 23 IBU.
Brewed and packaged by Boulevard Brewing, Kansas City, MO.

Dark brown color, slim beige head. Lookin' okay.

In the nose: Light roast. Earth, coffee flavors shine through, but not too loudly.

In the mouth: Coffee and cream at the top. And then it falls flat. Nothing going on. Far too light-bodied, not enough flavors to keep me interested. Woefully thin. Slight sweetness, continual coffee. But overall, ...eh. I definitely don't recommend it.

I'm not enjoying this one. Not usually the case with Boulevard beers. Aw, well.

Although, once again, I forgot to 'hard pour" this can. I doubt it would have improved the experience that much.

Crafted to showcase custom-roasted beans from Kansas City's Second Best Coffee, this smooth, creamy nitro milk stout blooms with notes of honey, molasses, citrus and cocoa powder. A mild nuttiness is accentuated by caramel and chocolate malts, with a touch of flaked oats.

Wild State Cider Semi Dry

Wild State Cider Semi Dry. 6.1 % ABV.
"Made By Some Fine Folks in Duluth, MN."
"Your Perfect Trail Companion."

Clear, pale green-ish coloring, no head.

In the nose: All apples. Dry. Slight touch of sweet. Guess that's why it's Semi Dry.

In the mouth: Crisp. Carbonated. Dry. Delicious. Even, shall we say, apple-icious.
Light bodied, easy drinking, very refreshing.

I'm not a cider person, but if I were, I'd drink this.

Wild Mind Rider NE IPA

Wild Mind Rider NE IPA.
6 % ABV, 20 IBU.
Wild Mind Artisan Ales, Minneapolis, MN.

Hazy, bright golden, slim ivory head.

In the nose: Big, bold fruit flavors, stone and citrus and otherwise. Plump and scrumptious.

In the mouth: Mmmm, yeah. Peach, apricot, grapefruit on the downlow. Bright and beautiful bitterness blasts the palate.Medium/lightish body, easy drinker, IPA lover's treat. Very vibrant fruity character bounces on the the palate, delights the senses. Tasty stuff.

Rider was brewed with Vic Secret, Equinox, and Simcoe to create an IPA bursting with bright citrus notes with a dank, bitter finish.

Three Floyds Alpha Klaus Christmas Porter

Three Floyds Alpha Klaus Christmas Porter
6 % ABV. 33 IBU. Three Floyds Brewing, Munster, Indiana

More Three Floyds beers are being released into our market, including some I've never had before. But, because I can't take all the beers home on the bus with me, I had to pick one and that one was this one that I first had 15 years ago. Acquired a bomber in a trade with an Indianian (?), and reviewed on BeerAdvocate.com in November, 2004. Here are those notes, warts and all:

deep brown color, with crimson highlights peeking through, blessed with a thick, prodigious cocoa-tan head...

Aroma: mmm, roasty-toasty, cinnamon, ginger, toffee, coffee, and cream...oh, yummy, oh, very good...nice as it gets...

Taste: Very smooth, yet terribly dark and full in the body, full in the flavor, ...a spicy, tastiness rings through the edges and uplifts and illuminates every aspect of the experience...nutmeg and clove...

Body never flags, stays full, and continually delivers flavor...finish isn't as strong as I'd like, but hangs on well enough...

overall, an excellent winter warmer/spiced ale, not a surprise from this outstanding brewery...wish it were easier to find though...

In 2019, would I change these notes? Less ellipses, more capitalization, better grammar and punctuation. About the beer, no. I wouldn't pull back on the enthusiasm. Maybe throw in a "yum, a dum, dum." And I'm so glad it is easier to find, now days.

Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout

Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout. 11.3 % ABV, 40 IBU.
Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids, MI.

This has been an elusive one for me. For many years, it was only released as a bomber, limited editions, selling out immediately. I never saw one for sale. Now, I walk into a store and there's a 4-pack on the shelf. $22 for 4, so it had better be worth it. Right?

According to Untappd, I've had it twice before, a few years ago, when Bryant-Lake Bowl had it on tap. I don't order enough Founders kegs to qualify to receive a specialty like this one, and these days?

Anyway, let's drink the beer:

Rich ebony coloring, fully impenetrable, under a slim brown head. Looking great, in every way.

In the nose: Molasses, licorice leather. Smoke. Dark rum. Treacle. Dark chocolate, espresso, caramel and coffee. And maple syrup, of course. Damnably decadent. Utterly lovable. Oh, my. Ridiculously delightful.

In the mouth: Sweet, dense, delectable, powerful. Thick and delicious. All kinds of depth and decadence. Big 'n' bourbon-y. Tickles the tongue, pleases the palate. Indulgent all the way. Dark fruit, vanilla, cherries, chocolate, oak, sweetness and dryness together at once.

Canadian Breakfast Stout is an Imperial Stout brewed with a blend of coffees and imported chocolates, then aged in spent bourbon barrels that have most recently been aging pure Michigan maple syrup.

CBS was born when we stumbled upon some bourbon barrels that had previously housed maple syrup. We opted to put the same base beer as KBS, an imperialized version of Breakfast Stout, in the maple barrels and, after one taste, we knew we had something special. Rich maple syrup, roasted coffee and velvety chocolate meld together in what can only be described as a transcendental drinking experience.

Venn Lunarising. Stout with Coffee, Chocolate & Vanilla.

Venn Lunarising. Stout with Coffee, Chocolate & Vanilla.
6.6 % ABV, 20 IBU. Venn Brewing, Minneapolis, MN.

Fullest blackness. Utter richness. Slim brown head.

In the nose: Boom, cocoa! Boom, coffee. And, ah, vanilla. Earthy, lush, sweet, divine. Wow. Quite nice.

In the mouth: It's all there, again. Delicious. In fact, even yum a dum, dum. Much malt, moderate bitterness, plenty of coffee, cocoa, and vanilla, altogether tasty. I enjoyed this one all the way through.

Coffee, chocolate, vanilla. Venn's take on a Breakfast Stout.

Malts: Maris Otter, Munich, Roasted Barley, Caramel 80, Chocolate

Hops: Warrior (United States)

Yeast: American Ale

And: Coffee, Chocolate, Vanilla, Lactose

Huh. If this is Venn's take on a "breakfast stout", then is this just a new name for their Breakfast Stout?

Lupulin S & M IPA

Lupulin S & M IPA.
7.5 % ABV, 60 IBU.
Lupulin Brewing, Big Lake, MN.

Hazy, bright golden, slim white, lace-leaving head.

In the nose: Big citrus. huge fruit. Grapefruit, tangerine, orange peel, lemon and lime. Blueberries. Delightful.

In the mouth: Beautiful, bountiful hop attack upon the palate, flush with fruity sensations. Light/medium bodied. Ease of drinking is high. Popping with hoppy delights. Nice buzz, good bitterness, exceptional smooth.

Simcoe and Mosaic? Those are the best hops! You can't go wrong with those two.

A bit fuzzy, heavy on the yeast...they can't quit the haze, bros...I'll forgive them for that. I'm still tired of it, but I am enjoying this.

IPA brewed with Simcoe & Mosaic Hops

Castle Danger Choice Pils

Castle Danger Choice Pils. 5.6 % ABV. Castle Danger Brewing, Two Harbors, MN.

Clear, bold, bright yellow coloring, slim white head.

In the nose: lightly fruity, hoppy. Slightly floral. A tad grainy.

In the mouth: Light-bodied, easy -drinking. Starts off a touch fruity, then turns dry. Nicely hopped. Clean. Crisp-ish. Likable. Nice pils.

Choice Pils is brewed in the tradition of classic German pilsners with our own dangerous twists. We use fine German malts and pure Lake Superior water for a great start, and finish with Saaz and Cascade hops for a floral, citrusy, and spicy zing. We chose to blend a classic European style with American craft brewing ingenuity. Here’s to making good choices.

Schell's Snowstorm 2019/2020: Red Ale

Schell's Snowstorm 2019/2010: Red Ale. 6.5 % ABV.
August Schell Brewing, New Ulm, MN.

Clear, bright crimson color, slim white head.

In the nose: Some sweetness at the start, lightly fruity, mostly malty.

In the mouth: Grabs the palate with a brisk bit of bitterness, lingering on the tongue. Bright fruitiness, crisp and clean, meaty malty flavors. Medium bodied. Excellent ease of drinking. Moderate hopping, medium bitterness, just enough to keep me happy (hoppy). Long lasting flavors in this highly likable ale.

A reddish amber ale for the seasoned winter veteran who can withstand even the coldest of days. Delicious malt flavors and a crisp, hoppy finish will leave you asking one question, were you prepared for the storm?

Drastic Measures Morning Dream New England IPA

Drastic Measures Morning Dream New England IPA.
7.1 % ABV. 66 IBU. Drastic Measures Brewing.

Absolutely hazed, bright golden, nearly peach-toned, with a lasting layer of ivory head above.

In the nose: Bitter orange peel and grapefruit. Pineapple and lime. A delight.

In the mouth: We're getting the haze, as well as the bitter. Nice and hoppy. Sweetness occasionally parlays with the bitter hop experience. A little dusty in the throat, a little chalky, but that is this style. I remain not the world's biggest fan of it, and will continue to cry out for the old school style of IPA, but this is a tasty one, for sure.

Collab with candian buddies Jeff and Russell!

Firestone Walker Sucaba Vintage 2019 Barley Wine Ale

Firestone Walker Sucuba Vintage 2019 Barley Wine Ale.
11.3 % ABV. Firestone Walker Brewing, Paso Robles, CA.

Dark mahogany-hued, slim white-ish head.

In the nose: Big, boozy barleywine aromas, popping out the wazoo. All the earmarks of a classic big ol' barley-wine. Ablaze with all the the raisin and fig, the woody character, the deep malty, chocolatey, tobacco and leather notes.

In the mouth: here's where it's all delivered, right on the palate. More big, more booze, massive malt, plenty of bourbon, vanilla, cherry, and all the deep, devilish dark fruits aplenty. Yum a dum, dum. I could have sat on this another five years, but I just had to try it now.

One of the best barleywines I've tasted in a good long while. Mmm, hmmm.

As always, this latest vintage delivers big, boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combine with soft chocolate malt undertones. Complex malt flavors are framed in oak with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, toasted coconut and a touch of dark cherry. Sucaba is a one-of-a-kind sipping experience. It is a beer built to last, and one that will reward careful cellaring for years to come. We highly recommend counting the years with an abacus.

Sisyphus Brandy Barrel-aged Weeliam Wallace Wee Heavy

Sisyphus Brandy Barrel-aged Weeliam Wallace Wee Heavy.
9 % ABV. Sisyphus Brewing, Minneapolis, MN.

Rich, mahogany-hued, slim head.

In the nose: the brandy and the booze comes spilling out. Barrel business covers over everything else.

In the mouth: Bigness upon bigness. Sweetness, thick maltiness, flavors upon flavors. Big bad brandy barrel smothers all, covering an otherwise big beer. Caramel and toffee all over the place. Altogether delicious. Mmm, mmm, mmm.

Needless to say, I'm liking this immensely.

Venn Grisette

Venn Grisette. Batch 215.
5 % ABV. 25 IBU.
Venn Brewing, Minneapolis, MN.

It's time to try my second "grisette" ever, proving again that Venn is trying to brew every single style in the world.

Crystal clear, bright golden hue, large, white, but disappearing head.

In the nose: Funky. wild. spicy. Some strange yeast probably at work here. Sweetness, some wheat malt. A touch floral.

In the mouth: Lightness and smooth. Slightly spicy, moderate hops. Lightly fruity, citrusy, lemony. And if I knew what spelt was all about, I'd mention it here, but I haven't got a handle on the whats, whys, and wherefores of spelt. Starts out sweet and fruity, ends on the dry side. Expertly refreshing.

Good grisette and you can drink it.

Complex, crisp, dry.
A fruity & spicy Belgian table beer brewed with spelt, oat, wheat, and pilsner malts.

Malts: Spelt, Oats, Wheat, Pilsner.
Hops: Cascade.
Yeast: French Saison.
Other: Dextrose.

Inbound Cinna-Man Buns Imperial Brown Ale

Inbound Cinna-Man Buns Imperial Brown Ale.
9 % ABV. 25 IBU.
Inbound BrewCo., Minneapolis, MN.

Some puns simply should not be made. This beer name is one of them.

Deep, dark brown, slim cocoa-tinged head.

In the nose: Cinnamon strikes first, quickly joined by other spices, ...cardamom, coriander...clove? It's  a mix, with rich malt base below. Caramel and toffee and a touch of coffee.

In the mouth: Slightly hot and quite spicy. Cinnamon leans on strong, holding it down heavy on top of this imperial brown ale. Starts a little sweet, and turns quickly dry. High alcohol starts ringing in high. Boom, boom, boom, boom. And I'm digging it. Not too shabby.

May have to come back for more of this.

Double brown ale with cinnamon, caramelized wort reduction, and toasted pecans. As sweet and warming as fresh cinnamon rolls...or a man bun. You pick. Brewed in collaboration with Invictus Brewing Co.
