Utter and complete blackness, thorough opacity, slim ring of brown foam above.

In the nose: deep coffee, rich, roasted, utter, earthy. Powerful. All covering up what might also be very interesting below.

In the mouth: it’s all about espresso,  rich, thick, ridiculous. More coffee than I’ve had in a beer in a long time. Cocoa and caramel lurks just below. Bourbon barrel aged effects are a side project. Quite tasty, this. 

Variant of KBS

KBS gets its coffee fix in the very first variant to come from our beloved bourbon barrel-aged stout. Yes, KBS may already be brewed with coffee, but it gets some extra oomph when it’s aged on espresso beans after being removed from barrels. The result is a fresh and snappy coffee twist on our classic barrel-aged beer. Who says you can’t start your day with a barrel-aged stout?

12.5 % ABV, 50 IBU. Clown Shoes Beer, Boston, MA. 

Total blackness, slim brown ring atop. 

In the nose: Rich malt, espresso notes, some cocoa. Small sweetness. 

In the mouth: Huge entrance on the palate, thick and rich. Did they put fudge in this one? (No, I'm kidding.)

Bourbon barrel effects are immense, lots of cherry, vanilla, oak. Deep, cocoa goodness. Coffee stays on top. Tasty stuff. And it's only 12.5 % ABV. Is that all? 

Bourbon really comes through in this one, espresso in the back seat. Huge, either way. Big time bigness. Much richness. Vast bitterness to meet massive malt. I'm digging it. Yum. A dum. Dum.

Stone Espresso Totalitarian Imperial Russian Stout brewed with Espresso.
10.6 % ABV. 65 IBU. Stone Brewing, Escondido, CA.

Solid blackness, rich, large, toasted tan head.

In the nose: Coffee. Cream. Cocoa. Mucho malt. Char, smoke, molasses, anise. Deeply complex.

In the mouth: Chocolate is king from the start. More of the same noted in the nose. Full body. Smooth, despite the strength. Nice and easy imperial stout. Full of favorite flavors. I like this. It's delicious.

With a beer as bold and robust as Stone Totalitarian Imperial Russian Stout, it’s not easy to build another level of flavor. That’s why we use hundreds of pounds of espresso beans to give Stone Espresso Totalitarian Imperial Russian Stout an added layer of rich complexity. The coffee flavors meld beautifully with the roasty bitterness of the dark malts for an intense complement of flavors, while staying true to the essence of this classic, historical style.

Surly Grindcore Espresso Milk Stout

Surly Grindcore Espresso Milk Stout. 6 % ABV. Stout brewed with espresso and lactose. Brewed and canned by Surly Brewing Company, Brooklyn Center, MN. "The original brewery-where it all started."

Previously only available on tap, in nitro kegs, now in cans, it's the re-imagining of Surly Four. That was an iced espresso milk stout, at around 10%.

Total blackness, gorgeous creamy brown head, completely opaque. Looks fantastic.

In the nose: Beautifully complex. Rich and deep, earthy and sweet. Wafts out coffee and cocoa in the warmest way. Vividly expressive.

In the mouth: Full body. Chocolate and coffee flavors flood the palate and make themselves home in the mouth. Delicious malty character continues and spreads and delights. Little bit of dark fruit and cherries pops out with a touch of vanilla, too.

I'm really enjoying this one. Two more left in the 4-pack. Gonna make them last, and go back for more.

WAKE UP. An aggressive, unapologetic barrage of deep coffee flavor defines GRINDCORE. Fusing a rich, slightly sweet stout body with toasty, complex espresso notes, Grindcore thrashes with fervent, uncommon purpose.

Cigar City Cubano-style Espresso Brown Ale

Cigar City Brewing Cubano-style Espresso Brown Ale with Vanilla, Cacao & Coffee Beans Added. 5.5% ABV. 25 IBU. Cigar City Brewing, Tampa, Florida.

Rich, dark, deep brown, with a lush, brown head, leaving lace. Looking good.

In the nose: Ah! Yes! Cream, cocoa, vanilla, chocolate, coffee....all the good stuff. So lovely.

In the mouth: Full body, rich texture, big mouthfeel. Massive maltiness, minimum hops. Rich and redolent with the earthy, the chocolatey, the espresso-y. All the yummy. Just ever-so delightful. The vanilla, the coffee, and all the yum.

"This brown ale is brewed with a heaping amount of Cubano-style espresso beans,vanilla and cacao nibs. Rich coffee notes dominate this beer, while still being balanced by a smooth malty backbone. Pairs well with arroz con leche and, of course, a delicate shot of Cubano espresso.
