Modist Top Dead Center West Coast IPA .
6% ABV, Modist Brewing, Minneapolis, MN.
Modist made a West Coast IPA? Again? Is this one as good, or better? Let’s find out....
Mostly clear, but full of floaties. I don’t remember if they were in the first three, but this beer is not that old. Bright golden hue, slim white head.
In the nose: bristling with citrus and pine. Orange, grapefruit, lemon. All the dankness is here.
In the mouth: hops pounce the palate, accompanied by appropriate bitterness. Enough, but not too much. Also known as, not as much as I want. Medium bodied, brief hoppy finish. Big fruit, big citrus, bitter and dry, just short of brittle. Meaning that there’s room for improvement. I like to try those attempts at West Coast IPAs by the breweries that succeed at the opposite, but I want them to nail it. This one is too juicy, nearly sweet, and doesn’t fully deliver the bitterness. I’ll go back to Alesmith, Sculpin, or Steel Toe.
I just want them to nail it once, that’s all. Is it too much to ask?
West Coast IPA brewed with pale ale malt, Vienna malt and malted wheat then kettle hopped and dry hopped with our hand-selected Mosaic, Sultana, El Dorado cryo and Mosaic cryo.
