Founders Velvet Rush Imperial Brown Ale. Brewed with Coffee, Chocolate, Vanilla Extract and Milk Sugar Aged in Bourbon Barrels. 2021 Release. (Bottled on 07.20.21)
11.1 % ABV, 30 IBU, Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids, MI.
To the eye: rich brown color, nearly opaque, large creamy/milky head. Looking good.
In the nose: Rich chocolate pops out first, soon wrapped up in vanilla. Coffee appears on the side. . Not much from bourbon barrel, yet. Whole lot of sweetness going on.
In the mouth: Rich, lush, malty, sweet, delicious. All the parts are here, in good balance. Very dessert-like, and I applaud Founders for not calling it a "pastry stout". It is a sign of intelligence and maturity.
Borrowing elements from both high-end craft cocktails and moody jazz clubs, Velvet Rush takes the bourbon barrel-aged brown ale up an octave with free-flowing notes of coffee, chocolate and vanilla extract. Milk sugar aids in weaving together this complex tapestry of flavors to create a unique sipping experience that really ties the room together.
